Nomadic Sound System.

Project from RCA graduate, Benjamin Newland. Best explained in his own words below, the possibilities this opens up are interesting. Sound systems in clubs are largely big immovable stacks designed so the sound stays pretty much the same throughout the room. Here however the sound is completely different dependent on where you are in the space and where the various elements of the soundsystem are located – an experience similar to walking around UVA’s Chorus. The Nomadic Sound System also has the ability to emerge from the club space which at times can seem both elitist and exclusive. Though perhaps in the spirit of Kode 9 I’d like to see it control habitants of a space rather than engaging with them. There’s an interesting interview with Ben here. To get the full effect listen in headphones, music is of course Girl Unit’s I.R.L..

“Nomadic sound system is a family of objects formed of wireless, battery powered, portable speakers designed to explore new ways for sound to interact with people and space.

The project borrows from the typology of the marching band with the pieces intended to be used together, each responsible for one part of the audible frequency spectrum.

Adding the capability of human controled movement to the components of a sound system opens up a new set of possibilities for the performance of electronic music, by enabling the use of location, narrative, and choreography, in human surround sound.”
