I can’t believe I’ve slept on this mix from Planet Mu boss Mike Paradinas (aka µ-zik). The freshest music for me coming out of the UK right now is that which (I’m not sure how intentional or not) is borrowing some of it’s palette from Chicago Juke / Footwork – Paradinas’ description sums it up for me “hyper syncopated rhythms, sub-bass, offbeat tom fills, triplets and pitch manipulated pop samples”. When mixed with the UK house/garage/grime/dubstep thing I’m of course talking music headed by Swamp 81 and Night Slugs, Addison Groove’s Footcrab, Girl Unit’s I.R.L., Ramadanman’s Work Them etc, you know the stuff.
This mix runs through some of the finest Chicago Juke trax, from DJ Nate, Rashad, Roc and others. Paradinas actually says in the comment there are forthcoming Juke releases on Mu, the only confirmed ones are a 12″ and then album from DJ Nate. There are only a handful of DJs that really do this thing properly here in the UK, though many are trying it; Paradinas, the Night Slugs crew (who’ve been doing it longer than anyone) and of course Addison Groove whose playing Pipedown03 next Saturday.
